About 20-20-2.org
The 20-20-2 rule exists to protect children's eye health and promote their well-being by encouraging a break every 20 minutes from near-sighted activities to look far away, and advocating for at least 2 hours of outdoor time each day
Our Story
The 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance is an international non-profit organization working at the intersection of business, optics, and education to make responsible business the new normal. We combat young age myopia, protect young eyes, promote a healthy lifestyle and improve livelihoods. We do not sell optical product or services. We focus on building the connection between the human behaviour and the care of eyes.
Issues We’re Tackling
Excessive short distance eye activities
Excessive short distance eye activities, meaning: too long without having ‘breaks’.
Excessive time spent indoor
Excessive time spent indoor, meaning: not enough chance to benefit from the daylight offered.
Our 2035 Vision
We need a systemic approach—a transformative global alliance that put parents and school teachers at the heart of the solution. Only together can we accelerate change at the speed and scale the world needs to slow down the global outbreak of near-sightedness amongst children.
The Three Pillars of Our Approach
Pillar 1 - Gamification
is the strategic attempt to enhance systems, services, organizations, and activities by creating similar experiences to those experienced when playing games in order to motivate and engage users. This is generally accomplished through the application of game design elements and game principles (dynamics and mechanics) in non-game contexts.
Gamification is part of persuasive system design, and it commonly employs game design elements to improve user engagement, organizational productivity, flow, learning, knowledge retention, ease of use, usefulness of systems, physical exercise and more. A collection of research on gamification shows that a majority of studies on gamification find it has positive effects on individuals. However, individual and contextual differences exist.
Pillar 2 - Collaborative Landscape
To maximize our impact, we need an inclusive and integrated approach. This means bringing all participants together, and all tools at our disposal, behind a shared vision for system change.
Pillar 3 - Impact Data
ambition is one thing and accountability is another. That’s why we need to track our impacts and by doing so create the right transparently.
Finance & Funding
Our work and programs are financed by diverse sources of income, from certification royalties to grants from governments and foundations, and individual donations.
The 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance team
Maarten van der Steen, an experienced professional with over twenty years in the optical/FMCG industry, initiated the establishment of the 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance in 2023. He collaborates with a diverse group of companies and individuals on various initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the 20-20-2 rule (after 20 minutes of close work, children should gaze at objects in the distance for at least 20 seconds, and they should be outside intermittently for at least 2 hours per day).
