Our Approach

Read all about how we make a tangible and measurable difference in peoples' lives.

The 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect as many young eyes around the world. We mainly focus on Behavioural Eye Care which connects the human behaviour with the health of eyes.

Instead of stopping young people to use smartphones, i-pad, (game-) computers and books in the daily live, the alliance works together to restore the balance between people’s (digital) needs and taking care of young eyes. Especially the eye health of children who are too young to set the right boundaries in life themselves, need special care.

We are an alliance of people and organisations who pledge to take action. We do this because we want to shift the human behaviour towards being ‘net positive’ in terms of getting the fullest out of our life while we take care of our and young eyes.

Why work with markets and different organizations?

Markets need to change. They need to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

The 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance supports parents, teachers, opticians, (game) computer makers and many more who change the lives of our children. According to us, the most critical phase for eyes is the time between the age of 6 and 12. By scaling up the social and market forces that protect young eyes we can make a difference that is truly sustainable.

We want parents, school teachers, libraries, sport clubs, researches, the optical industry and many more to internalize different values; to not degrade — but restore, to not displace—but include, to work in harmony with the biological and medical boundaries of our eyes — not against them.

We want markets to become the fastest and most scalable solution to slow down the rapid increase of (high) Myopia across the globe. Scientific research show that high Myopia is now a global health issue and there is not easy ‘cure’. At best we can slow down the progression of myopia but in order to do so we need to work together better.

We work in collaboration with schools, parents, children, libraries, opticians, researchers and many more so we together can shift market behaviour toward rewarding positive social, economic, and environmental impacts. By doing that, people become both the stewards and the primary beneficiaries of what we do.

We use a ‘continuous improvement’ approach. We partner with people and organizations to move from harmful and degrading practices to sustainable ones.

Why form an alliance?

Global crises need a joint and systemic approach. We are an alliance of people who pledge to take action. We need to move beyond the current mindset of fragmented, incremental, project-centric efforts which are holding us back.

Our alliance of parents, school teachers, libraries, sport clubs, opticians, researches, companies, governments, civil society partners, and millions of individuals are committed to creating a world where young eyes are protected.

What’s the strategy?

Our strategy is to accelerate the speed and scale of impact through a virtuous cycle; where more healthy young eyes lead to more committed companies and consumers, leading to more investment and support parties give that will influence the behaviour of children, and so on. Everyone benefits from this cycle.

What are our interventions?

To shift markets to being ´net positive´, we must work with both sides of market forces. At first parents and school teachers need to know the eye health risks of excessive short distance eye activities like looking at a smartphone, watching videos on an i-pad, using game consoles, reading books etc. Therefore the 20-20-2 Eye Care Alliance activates awareness campaigns that informs them about the risks but also provides a simple solution, like the 20-20-2 rule. More about the 20-20-2 rule click here.

Apart from awareness campaigns that are organized by the alliance, we also provide assets that everyone can download and use free of charge.
